Werner John has enjoyed life as an entrepreneurial musician since graduating from Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC in 1981. From 1980-1987 he performed on recorders and flutes in the Asheville, NC area, including with the early music ensemble "Going Baroque", and taught woodwinds privately and in groups.

During 1986-1988 Werner organized Baroque instrumental concerts in Western NC, from duos to chamber concerto ensembles. During this period he also began recording his and others' music with early digital technology and in 1988 co-founded the label "Early Light Music" with guitarist and lutenist Robert Anders. The label's first two CD recordings, Early Light and Christmas Past, were successful and are still in print.

In 1992, after moving to the Amherst, Massachusetts area, Werner John learned of the Native American style flute and soon began carving these flutes. Featuring his own designs and exclusive features, Werner has created and sold over 800 flutes. His first album of original music for Native flutes, Cedar Song, was released in 1996. A second album, The Healing Flute, followed in 2000. And Werner released a third recording of peaceful Native flute instrumentals, Comfort in the Night also featuring Alana Woods, harpist, in December 2007.

Werner has been selling his music, and later flutes, directly to retail customers at shows and festivals since 1987. The five titles mentioned make up the majority of music sales totaling over 180,000 recordings. His music appeals to people of all ages looking for quiet beauty, relaxation and uplift.

New directions include a type of instrument Werner is developing directly from sounds found in nature. These "Gaiatonic" instruments will be heard in new music blending Native American, nature and classical elements.

Werner is also developing a new FLUTEWALKER performance series which combines beauty, meaning and fun into unique story-concerts featuring ancient flutes from around the world (see brochure). These programs will debut in November 2008 in the northeast US.
